Cookie Policy
1.What cookies are and why we use them
Cookies are small text files that the precedentia.md platform stores on your device when you visit it. They allow the platform to recognise you on subsequent visits, remember your preferences and function correctly from a technical standpoint.
In addition to cookies, the Platform uses Local Storage for two items: the chosen interface theme (light or dark) and the confirmation that you have seen the cookie notice (the pp-cookie-notice key, with version and date). Both remain exclusively in your browser, are not transmitted to the server and do not allow the individual to be identified.
| Precedentia uses only strictly necessary cookies — three in total. We do not set analytics, advertising, retargeting or profiling cookies, either directly or through third parties. For this reason we do not ask for your consent to cookies: on your first visit we only display an informational notice, without accept or reject buttons, because there are no categories for which consent would be required. Visitors without an account receive only the language cookie and, where applicable, the form protection cookie. |
| Your right to information and control: Under Law No. 195/2024 on personal data protection, you have the right to be informed about the use of cookies and, should non-essential cookies be introduced, to give or withdraw your consent to them. |
2.Categories of cookies used
2.1. Strictly necessary cookies
These cookies are indispensable for the technical functioning of the platform. They are active automatically, without requiring your consent, because without them the platform cannot function correctly.
| Name | Type | Provider | Duration | Purpose |
| sessionid | Session | precedentia.md | 2 weeks | Maintains the authentication session and the free search counter for visitors without an account |
| csrftoken | Persistent | precedentia.md | 1 year | Protection against CSRF attacks on forms. Set on the first submission of a form |
| django_language | Persistent | precedentia.md | 1 year | Remembers the chosen interface language (ro / ru / en). SameSite=Lax |
| Note on sessionid For visitors without an account, this cookie stores only the number of searches performed today, in order to apply the free limit and prevent automated data extraction. It does not contain your name, email address or queries and is not used for tracking. |
2.2. Authentication cookies
Authentication does not add any new cookies: the same sessionid cookie from section 2.1 is what keeps you signed in after authentication. The only special case arises when using the “Sign in with Google” button.
| Context | What happens |
| Sign-in with email and password | No additional cookie is set — sessionid is used |
| Sign in with Google | You are temporarily redirected to accounts.google.com, which sets its own cookies on the Google domain, in accordance with Google's policy. Precedentia neither sets nor reads these cookies |
| Sign-out | The sessionid cookie is invalidated immediately |
| The session cookie cannot be disabled without losing the ability to sign in. All other functions of the Platform — search, filters, reading decisions — also work without it. |
2.3. Functional cookies
Precedentia does not use functional cookies. Search history and saved decisions are stored in your account, in the database, not in the browser — which is why they are available from any device and disappear completely when the account is deleted. The only preference stored locally is the interface theme, in Local Storage.
| Item | Where it is stored | Duration |
| Interface theme (light / dark) | Local Storage, in your browser | Until the browser data are cleared |
| Confirmation of the cookie notice (pp-cookie-notice) | Local Storage, in your browser | 12 months, after which the notice is displayed again |
| Search history | Database, linked to your account | 12 months (Privacy Policy, §6) |
| Saved decisions and alerts | Database, linked to your account | Until they or the account are deleted |
| Conversations with the AI Legal Assistant | Database, linked to your account | Until deleted by you |
| The context of the conversation with the AI Legal Assistant is kept on the server, in your account, not in a cookie. This allows a conversation to be resumed from another device and, more importantly, allows you to delete it permanently — a cookie could not have been deleted from the server. |
2.4. Analytics / performance cookies
Precedentia does not use analytics cookies. We measure traffic with Umami — a service that sets no cookies, does not store the IP address and does not create a persistent visitor identifier. For this reason the measurement does not require consent and cannot be used to recognise you on a subsequent visit.
| What is measured | What is NOT measured |
| The page visited and the referring page (referrer) | IP address — not stored |
| Browser type, operating system and device | The content of search queries |
| Country, derived from the IP address, which is then discarded | The visitor's identity or account |
| Total number of visits per page | Behaviour across sessions or across sites |
| The provider of the measurement service is Umami Software, Inc. (USA). The data transmitted are aggregated and do not allow the visitor to be identified. You can block the measurement entirely with any script-blocking extension — the Platform works identically. |
| Precedentia does NOT use behavioural advertising, retargeting or commercial profiling cookies. Analytics data are used exclusively to improve the legal platform. There is no sharing with advertising networks or data brokers. |
2.5. Third-party cookies
The Platform integrates third-party services that may set their own cookies. The third-party services and their cookies are listed below:
| Provider | When it is involved | Cookies set on precedentia.md | Own policy |
| Only if you click “Sign in with Google” | None. Google cookies are set on the Google domain, during the redirect | policies.google.com/privacy | |
| BC „Maib” S.A. | Only when making a payment | None. Payment takes place on the bank's page | maib.md |
| Umami Software, Inc. | On every page view | None — the service is cookie-free | umami.is/privacy |
SCALELAW SOLUTIONS SRL does not control the cookies set by third-party services and is not responsible for their privacy policies. We recommend that you consult their individual policies.
3.Your consent
3.1. Why the notice does not ask for consent
Consent is required only for cookies that are not strictly necessary. Precedentia does not set such cookies, so there is nothing to ask you for. In practice, this means:
- You are not asked to accept anything in order to read case law;
- There are no cookie categories to enable or disable;
- We do not track what you have refused, because we do not ask you for anything;
- If we ever introduce a non-essential cookie, we will ask for explicit consent, with equal “Accept” and “Reject” buttons, before setting it.
The strictly necessary cookies listed in Section 2.1 are set without consent, under the legal exemption for cookies that are indispensable for the operation of a service requested by the user.
3.2. Withdrawal of consent
Since we do not collect consent, there is nothing to withdraw. You can, however, control the strictly necessary cookies at any time by:
- Your browser settings (instructions in Section 4);
- Signing out of your account, which immediately invalidates the session cookie;
- Clearing the site data from your browser, which removes all three.
3.3. Effect of refusing non-essential cookies
There are no non-essential cookies to refuse. Blocking the strictly necessary ones, however, has concrete effects:
- Without sessionid you cannot sign in or access your account;
- Without csrftoken you cannot submit forms, including the search form;
- Without django_language the interface reverts to Romanian on every new page;
- Search, filters and reading decisions remain available to visitors without an account.
4.Managing and disabling cookies
4.1. Through browser settings
All modern browsers allow cookies to be managed from the settings menu:
- Google Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data;
- Mozilla Firefox: Options > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data;
- Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and website data;
- Microsoft Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions;
- Opera: Settings > Privacy & security > Cookies.
| Notice: disabling essential cookies will prevent the platform from functioning correctly, including authentication and maintaining the search session. |
4.2. Through specific tools
- Any script-blocking extension stops the aggregated traffic measurement without affecting the functioning of the Platform;
- The browser's private browsing mode removes all three cookies when the window is closed;
- No advertising opt-out tools are necessary — Precedentia does not use advertising, retargeting or tracking networks.
4.3. Through the Precedentia platform
The Platform does not have a cookie preferences panel, because there are no preferences to express: all three cookies are strictly necessary. For any question regarding cookies, you can write to us at info@applexium.com.
5.Cookies and personal data
The sessionid cookie may be considered personal data within the meaning of Law No. 195/2024 on personal data protection when it belongs to an authenticated user, as it allows the session to be linked to an account. The csrftoken and django_language cookies do not identify the individual.
Processing is carried out in accordance with the Precedentia Privacy Policy. The legal basis for the three cookies is the performance of the contract and, respectively, the legitimate interest in operating a secure service — not consent, since none of them falls within the categories for which consent would be required.
| Note on users without an account Visitors who do not have an account are not identified through cookies. In their case, the session cookie stores only the number of searches performed today. The IP address is used for security and for limiting abuse, not for profiling, and is not stored by the traffic measurement service. |
6.Cookies in the context of a legal platform
Precedentia has particular features compared with an ordinary platform, which influence the use of cookies:
6.1. Cookies and the confidentiality of legal research
Platform users — lawyers, judges, litigants — may perform searches that are professionally or personally sensitive (e.g. searches concerning a pending case, a precedent in criminal matters, a case concerning private life). For this reason:
- Search history is visible exclusively in your authenticated account and can be deleted at any time;
- We do not use the content of searches for advertising, commercial profiling or training AI models;
- The traffic measurement service does not receive the queries — it sees only the address of the page visited;
- Searching without an account leaves no history: if you want maximum confidentiality in your research, you can carry it out without signing in.
6.2. Cookies and the AI Legal Assistant
The context of the conversation with the AI Legal Assistant is kept on the server, linked to your account, not in a cookie. This allows:
- Coherent follow-up questions within the same conversation (“what about in criminal matters?”, “is there also a Constitutional Court decision?”);
- Resuming the conversation from another device, with the same account;
- Its permanent deletion at your request — which a cookie would not have allowed.
To generate the response, the conversation text is transmitted to the AI model processor (Anthropic PBC), which, under its commercial terms, does not use it to train models. We do not transmit it to anyone else and do not publish it. Details in the Privacy Policy, Section 9.1.
7.Changes to the Cookie Policy
We reserve the right to update this Cookie Policy to reflect legislative, technical or operational changes. The updated version will be published on the platform, indicating the date of the last change.
In the event of significant changes to the types of cookies used, we will display the notice again and, should non-essential cookies be introduced, we will ask for consent before setting them.
